Nigerian, 9 others die, 259 injured in Saudi Arabia fire

A Nigerian woman, three Canadians and a Pakistani are among at least 10 people killed in a fire accident inside a Saudi Arabian residential compound, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Over 200 people were also injured in the fire outbreak involving workers of the Saudi national oil company, Aramco, in Khobar town.

Though the identity of the Nigerian and three Canadians who died in the outbreak had not been made public, their nationality has been confirmed.

According to AP, Ali bin Saad al-Qahtani, a civil defence spokesman for the kingdom's eastern province, provided the update in comments carried by the official Saudi Press Agency early Monday.

"He said a total of 10 people died and 259 were injured. The civil defence directorate previously said 11 people were killed."

Al-Qahtani did not provide the nationalities of the other five people killed in the incident.

"A preliminary investigation suggests a short circuit in an electrical transformer in the building's basement sparked the blaze, which quickly spread through 130 cars parked in the basement," he said.

The complex, known as Radium, is a gated community of eight six-storey buildings with a total of 486 residential units as well as swimming pools and other leisure facilities, according to Aramco's website.

Saudi Aramco says it employs more than 61,000 workers worldwide from 77 countries. Foreigners represent around a third of the kingdom's population of 30.8 million.

Amaechi Challenges Wike To Publish Statements Of Govt Accounts

Amaechi Challenges Wike To Publish Statements Of Govt Accounts, Says he left N7.5bn cash in IGR and others totalling N8bn

Former Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, has challenged his successor in office, Governor Nyesom Wike to publish the statements of government accounts with Skye Bank, FAAC, Zenith Bank and Access Bank, insisting that about N7.5 billion cash was left as balance in the state Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, as at May 29, 2015, alongside money in other accounts, totalling N8 billion.

Amaechi in a statement, yesterday, by his media aide, said: "Our attention has been drawn to comments by Governor Wike, where he attempted to justify his sham probe of the immediate past governor of the state and distort our statement on the amount of money Amaechi left in the state treasury.

Wike and Amaechi
"However, what the public may not know is that Wike's deceptive probe of Amaechi is a distraction to entertain and keep the public focus on his circus show, while he siphons and salt away billions of naira from the state treasury. From the moment he stepped into Government House, Port Harcourt, Wike has run a government of lies, deception and fraud.

"Wike claimed he met a completely empty treasury. That again is another big lie and grand deception to steal state funds. We have said that Amaechi left billions of naira and we even went ahead to mention the banks and give the names of the accounts the money were, as at May 29, 2015.

"We repeat that N7.5 billion cash was left behind as balance in the state Internally Generated Revenue account with Skye Bank, FAAC account with Zenith Bank, balance with Access Bank and funds in the State reserve fund account in First Bank. This is besides other balance in the state Government House account with Zenith Bank and other government ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs accounts, like the Bureau for Public Procurement, BPP. Amaechi left N939m in the Commercial Agric Credit Scheme Account in Zenith Bank.

"By the time you pull all these together, we are looking at readily available cash in the region of N8 billion to N10 billion left for the Wike administration. We have mentioned banks, account names and funds left in the accounts. These are facts that cannot be distorted by Wike.

"If Wike says he's not lying that he met an empty treasury, we challenge him to publish the statements of these government accounts that we have mentioned and other Rivers State Government ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs accounts as at May 29 to prove his claim and show the public that Amaechi left an empty treasury for him."

Man Jailed 5 Years For Setting Pregnant Lover On Fire

A 37-year-old lucky Esonahae was on Monday sentenced by an Egor Magistrate Court in Benin, Edo State to five years imprisonment for setting his pregnant lover ablaze.
Lucky, a bar operator, was arraigned on a one-count charge of causing bodily harm.

The charge read, "That you, Lucky Esonahae, on July 6, 2015, at Uwelu Quartres, Benin, in Egor Magisterial District, did unlawfully cause grievous harm to one Stella Isaac, by setting her on fire with kerosene, which cause her bodily harm and, thereby, committed an offence punishable under Section 355(B) of the Criminal Code Cap 48, Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable to Edo State."

While testifying in court, the prosecuting officer, Sergeant Ganiyu Yahya said the incident occurred at Uwelu Quartres in Benin on July 6, adding that the victim identified as Stella Isaac reported the matter to the police the same day.

The prosecutor said the convict poured kerosene on the head of the victim, who was said to be seven months pregnant before setting her on fire.

‎Ganiyu Yahaya told the court that the woman was rescued by one of her sons and a neighbour who forced their way into the room as she had been locked in.

He disclosed that the woman was later rushed to the Central Hospital where she was treated for the burns she sustained on her hands and forehead.

According to Yahaya, the convict had earlier accused the victim of infidelity after she allegedly returned home from her antenatal at about 6pm, adding that he threatened to kill her before she ran to her sister's house.

Lucky Esonahae pleaded guilty to the offence and asked the court for leniency.

However, the presiding magistrate, Igho Braimoh while delivering the verdict ‎said the court would not be lenient, stressing that "for a 37-year-old man to set a lover on fire, leaves much to be desired."

Braimoh consequently sentenced the convict to five years imprisonment with hard labour.

Boko Haram: Buhari meets parents of abducted Chibok girls

buhari with chibok girls
PRESIDENT Muhannadu Buhari has reassured the parents of the abducted Chibok School girls of his government’s determination and commitment to rescuing the girls alive and healthy.
President Buhari, who was represented by Governor Kashim Shettima, said “we share the agony and sorrow of our abducted girls, as government we are working hard to rescue your girls alive and healthy. I am optimistic that the girls are still alive and will soon be rescued and handed over to their parents by the grace of God.”
The president said he was with the parents of the abducted Chibok girls, noting that he felt the agony and the psychological trauma they went through, as he is also a father. The president called on them to exercise patience as government was doing everything possible to make sure the girls were rescued.

“We leaders are responsible for taking care of our people and are accountable before the Almighty God, as such, the government will continue to render assistance to the parents of the abducted girls, as most of the parent cannot go to their farms nor carry on with their petty trading, because of the psychological trauma and agony they are going through,” the president lamented.
He said this was a calamity that had befallen the country and it had no religious or tribal connotation, as the terrorists were killing both Muslims and Christians and all tribes they came across with. President Buhari, however, appealed to the non governmental organisations (NGOs) to stop politicising and making the abduction issue a money making business.

While appealing to the parents to be calm and patient, he also assured the parents that the girls would be rescued and the insurgency would come to an end, saying government was fully committed to fighting the insurgency to a stand still, as the country now had credible and dedicated service chiefs.

The government also gave each parent of the abducted girls the token sum of N100,000 and some clothing materials to alleviate their suffering, adding that ‘‘this token is not a compensation of their daughters, but just to assist them.’Responding on behalf of the parents, Lawan Shettima thanked the president for his concern about their plight and assured the president of their cooperation, as this administration is doing everything possible to rescue. He also thanked the government for the assistance rendered them.

DSS uncovers Boko Haram spy ring at Abuja Airport

Nigeria's Department of State Services (DSS) says it has uncovered a spy cell run by militant Islamist group Boko Haram at the Nnamdi Azikiwe international Airport in the capital Abuja apparently aimed at selecting targets for attack, the country's national security agency said.

In a statement late on Friday, the DSS said it discovered the ring on Monday and was working with aviation authorities to pre-empt any attack.President Muhammadu Buhari has made halting Boko Haram's six-year-old insurgency a priority, but a Reuters tally shows the jihadist group has killed more than 700 people in Nigeria in bomb attacks and shootings since he came to office on May 29.

The DSS said it had arrested a 14-year-old boy who said he had been instructed to spy on the airport's security procedures, including passenger screening and boarding processes, and report what he had learned. It said the man who directed the boy had not been located."The service, in liaison with the aviation security of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, disrupted a spying network mounted by the Boko Haram terrorists," DSS spokesman Tony Opuiyo said in the statement."The service is working closely with major aviation stakeholders, especially the Aviation Security Department, to forestall any possible attack and to ensure adequate security at the airports."Boko Haram, whose insurgency mainly focuses on the northeast, has carried out some attacks in Abuja including the bombing of the U.N. headquarters in the city four years ago, which killed 23 people.

Buhari’s appointments unacceptable to Ndigbo – Ohaneze Youth Council says

The Ohaneze Youth Council, OYC have released a statement expressing their displeasure at the non inclusion of the Ibos in all the appointments made by President Buhari so far. Their statement signed by its president Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro below ..
"We stand to condemn this glaring hatred for Ndigbo by the administration of President Buhari. We recall that apart from several other appointments, Buhari’s government has also appointed Service Chiefs and in a similar manner, he sidelined the South-East zone.
As if that was not enough, the long-awaited position of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, has come at last and this government deemed nobody from the South-East qualified enough to occupy that position, which was earlier zoned to Ndigbo. We are indeed shocked by this turn of events, which are totally at variance with Mr. President’s earlier stand that he was for nobody but that he was for everybody. We are at a loss where this statement fits in, considering all the actions he has taken so far, which are all against the interest of Ndigbo. Where is the justice; where is the equity; where is the one Nigeria? How long shall Ndigbo be pushed to the walls? The Ohaneze Youth Council is saying it loud and clear that these appointments are unacceptable to us and we urge Mr. President to reverse them, otherwise it would appear that there is a grand-design to annihilate the Igbos out of the political and economic system in this country. The Second Niger Bridge is a project that touches on the economic life of the entire South-East and we find it curious that the Federal Government is not ready to attach any priority to it. “We use this medium to urge Mr. President to right these wrongs and move the country forward as one. Tribalism has never paid Nigeria and this period will not make any difference”.
